FRANSCHHOEK BASTILLE FESTIVAL

A CELEBRATION OF FREEDOM

17 & 18 JULY 2010

CT_winetastingMake your way to Franschhoek, South Africa’s Gourmet Capital, over the weekend of the 17th and 18th of July, where locals and visitors will be celebrating the Valley’s centuries-old French Huguenot heritage at its annual Bastille Festival.

The Franschhoek Wine Valley has throughout the years been linked with the pursuit of freedom, as the destination where the French Huguenots sought refuge from persecution. Aside from the European legacy, the connection with freedom is also evident in a local context with the Drakenstein Prison (formerly Victor Verster), the prison from which the iconic Nelson Mandela was released, situated between Franschhoek and Paarl. This year in particular will be more significant as it commemorates the 20th anniversary of Mr Mandela’s release from the exact prison.

And 2010 will without a doubt be a year of celebrations. Taking into account that South Africa will be winding down from the hype and festivities of World Cup 2010, what better way to paint the town red, white and blue and join in ‘A Celebration of Freedom’. Not forgetting, it’s the only time of the year you’ll be forgiven for wearing a beret.

The Food and Wine Marquee open from 12 noon until 5pm, is always the focal point which draws people to the hub of activity, where visitors can sample fine wines from some of Franschhoek’s award-winning wine estates and indulge in mouth-watering dishes created by the Valley’s highly acclaimed chefs. Sample a wide selection of cuisine, ranging from: oysters, sushi, local and French cheeses to charcuterie, hand-made chocolates and salmon trout from the area.

Not to be missed is the festival’s comprehensive sporting element featuring the usual, popular traditions and activities of: boules, Franschhoek minstrel parade, kiddies’ soccer, a barrel-rolling contest and a fun run. A farmers’ market, craft market stalls, musicians and children’s activities are also included in the line up of festival celebrations. For those wanting to appreciate French heritage in comfort, the Screening Room at Le Quartier Français will be screening French movies throughout the weekend.

Known throughout the world for its fine cuisine, Franschhoek’s award-winning restaurants will also be offering special menus exclusively prepared for this annual Festival.

So, with something for everyone, make a weekend of your visit, taking full advantage of the many Bastille accommodation packages on offer. Come celebrate the universal triumph of freedom. C’est la vie!

COST

An R100.00 per person entrance fee allows you access to the Food and Wine Marquee, which includes a tasting glass and a complimentary booklet containing 5 tasting coupons. Thereafter all tastings will be charged on consumption.

BOOKINGS

Tickets can be purchased through www.webtickets.co.za, but hurry as tickets are limited. Once the marquee is full no further patrons will be admitted.

The newly upgraded and longer Coelacanth Route will take you along the top of the Western Head where breathtaking vistas await; views across to the sheer cliffs of the Eastern Head and out over the Indian Ocean towards Buffalo Bay. Be prepared to be challenged by some hill work as you climb up from sea level to take in the splendour on the ridge line above the Heads. Seahorse Trail Run : 11.0 km

featherbed trail run knysna oyster festival 2010The new shorter Seahorse Route takes a more direct line to the finish, with all its participants being driven to the top of the Western Head by the Featherbed Nature Reserve 4 x 4 truck and seated trailer. This will save your legs the steep, heart pumping, climb from sea level however there is still a fair share of challenging hill work to contend with as you join up with the longer Coelacanth Trail on the ridge line above the Heads. The relief will come as you descend into Lake Brenton and along the Outeniqua Choo Choo railway bridge to the Finish Line back at the Featherbed Ferry Terminus @ Cruise Cafe.

Far more off road track than the original route is sure to make this a race to remember!

WHEN IS THE RACE?

The race will take place on Tuesday 6th of July 2010 and will also form part of “The Big 5 at The Knysna Oyster Festival” – a special package being offered by various event organisers, accommodation and lifestyle establishments.

BIG 5 EVENTS

This year’s Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival challenges sports people of all ages to do the Big 5 and take part in any five of the following Festival events – the Pick n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Knysna MTB Race and Road Race, the Salomon Featherbed Trail Run, Duesouth XTERRA presented by REHIDRAT®, the Pick n Pay Cape Times Knysna Full or Half Marathon and the Knysna Lagoon Challenge.

This is a one of a kind challenge, and for your efforts you’ll receive 10% discount on entry fees for the five races as well as discounts at a number of restaurants, activities and shops in Knysna for the duration of the Festival.

Competitors will automatically be entered into a competition which offers a prize of nine nights’ accommodation for two at Hillview self-catering apartments. Accommodation prizes will also go to 2nd and 3rd places.

For those wishing to enter “The Big 5 at the Knysna Oyster Festival” Event & Accomodation special package please enter here . Please note that 150 entries have been set aside for this special promotion only so you will need to be quick in order not to miss this boat !

Entries are limited and are allocated on a first come first serve basis.

The Featherbed Company propose to introduce a Featherbed Trail Run Spectator package – this will allow your friends, family or supporters to board their own ferry and travel to the Knysna Heads to watch the action from the comfort of your craft. Coelacanth participants will be seen traversing the first section of trail along the jagged coast before they climb up to the top of the western Head.

Once off the ferries, Seahorse athletes will be transported by vehicle to their remote start. Unfortunately it will not be possible to move spectators to this start point however their progress will be seen from the boat on the lagoon as they travel up to their start line.

The boat will then follow the runners progress back to Knysna and, subject to the tide, offer an additional spectator point close to the main channel along the disused Chjoo Chjoo Railway Bridge – watching athletes make their way to the Finish Line at the Featherbed Ferry Terminus @ Cruise Café.

Package includes Ferry trip and a Meal at R 130.00 (Please note that a fully stocked bar is available on board to purchase your drinks.)

Bookings will be made available together with online entries on 1st of April 2010.

Please note this Spectator Package will be available subject to there being enough support.

ACCOMMODATION

Please refer to the new revamped Knysna Tourism website on www.oysterfestival.co.za. All establishments listed have committed to offering you standard Festival pricings and not the super inflated price gauging that has become prevalent with the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Few hip-hop outfits can claim to have consistently survived the times through trial and tribulations. Ill-Literate-Skill’s foundation has never been tried and tested as much as it has been in recent months, but the crew is proving to be more determined and resilient than ever. With the independent release of their long awaited sophomore album, Off The Radar, Ill Skillz truly reflects the eclecticism Jimmy Flexx and Tommy Jinxx have in their approach to making traditional hip hop that honours the golden era, yet maintaining progression and relevance throughout.

DSC_9836

Jimmy Flexx and Tommy Jinxx have had to fight harder for their place, jumping on open-mic slots, to hosting and promoting their own events at different venues around Cape Town, they have come a long way amidst a lot of nay saying and industry politics. Now with the ‘Another Day Another Rhyme’ EP, the 2 ‘Battle of Gugulethu’ collaborative mixtapes and a new album under their belt, opportunities can only be endless for I.L.S.

The group already has a new video for “Rocoflow”, which is a cut off their album and are working on two more for “Lover in me and you” and the title track “Off The Radar”.

Check out this video! Uno in Germany

Check out the new video for Camagu, the first single from Driemanskap’s debut album, Igqabhukil’ InyongoDriemanskap are the future of SA hip hop. They epitomise the best traditions of lyricism, meaningful content and the desire to speak about their own culture with their own voices. Fittingly, Camagu is about the importance of respecting and celebrating your culture and its traditions, even if you are a modern urban hip hop head.

The video was shot entirely on location in Khayelitsha, Cape Town byGreenhaus Production.
