Welcome to Flukes Restaurant- tucked into the mountainside and overlooking Glencairn beach, Flukes is at the confluence of mountain, sea and wetlands. The relaxed atmosphere reflects the surrounding area and the views from the terrace make it ideal for whale watching (in season). The terrace encourages lingering over shared platters, chilled wine and mesmerizing views of the bay.
Glencairn is the centre of the Cape Point Route – Cape Town’s playground and we welcome all sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. Locals have business meetings and families pop in to visit, anyone and everyone is invited! Locals cherish it and foreigners love it. Our main rule is that relaxation is essential. Bask in the sunlight with good food and a gathering of friends; it has that effect on people.
Flukes has an outside terrace with unsurpassed sea views and an inside fine dining restaurant decorated with brightly coloured oil paintings by South African artist Andrew Verster. The sculptures displayed on the walls were inspired by prehistoric marine fossils and were made by Stellenbosch artist by Jacques Dhont. We encourage you to check out an exhibition of art by well known documentary photographer, Jurgen Schadeberg, who took all the black and white photographs in the 1950’s and features jazz images from South Africa’s jazz artists – Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and Kippie Moeketsi amongst otheres. The building was constructed in 1904 and renovated in 2004 so high ceilings, thick walls and rich wooden floors combine to create the relaxed atmosphereand reflect the glories of a bygone era.
Our menu was designed around our love of eating, fine food and socialization and with that in mind we have developed shared platters – social eating at its best. We don’t believe in limiting ourselves however and have a selection of light healthy meals, delicious breakfasts and a superb selection of seafood and grilled meats. Named after the famed whale tail, Flukes is a year round gourmet sensation for diners. Whale sized portions are served for regular sized prices. The choices range from hearty meat dishes to fresh seafood, with an assortment of vegetarian fare and an impressive array of daily specials. We encourage you to select wines from our carefully chosen wine list to enhance your dining pleasure, or just pop in for a drink and make yourself feel at home. Confessions from our chef Ivan Cameron who loves fresh ingredients and likes to keep the food simple, innovative and fun: “enhance the flavour, don’t disguise it” and “Don’t rush, you need time to enjoy food”.
