Galaxy

Galaxy

galaxy logoSince the opening in December 1978, Galaxy has stayed at the forefront of the nightclub industry! This is unheard of in the nightclub industry! WorldWide!!!

Now, what makes Galaxy so special?
Renovations have been done over the years with the attempt to move with the times.
They, every few years, upgraded or fixed their sound and lighting equipment, put down new tiles and painted the place.
You still see their posters all over the place and Lee Downs keeps ‘pumping’ the Galaxy week after week.
But, is this really what keeps the Galaxy going for almost three decades now?

I don’t think so. It certainly plays a part in its ongoing success, but this is not the root of its survival.
The root I believe is much deeper than that. I am not even sure if the Galaxy people are aware of it, but the root is very simple.
The Galaxy has got soul.

Now, a building does not have soul. Fancy sound, lights and furniture does not create soul. New tiles and movable stages do not create soul. Dr Jules on his own cannot create soul. Not even Andy has a connection who can organise soul.

The building and décor creates ambiance and Dr Jules creates the vibe, but soul? Soul is something else.
If today, you are dancing in the same spot that your grandparents danced in when they were young, and chances are that your kids will one day dance there too, believe me, you are contributing to the soul that makes Galaxy what it is.

If none of your family members ever visited the Galaxy and you rock up there one day, you will feel that soul.
It is solid as a rock and it makes you (consciously or subconsciously) comfortable. It just feels right.
It does not matter which corner of the earth you come from. When you first set foot in the Galaxy, you feel at home. The soul of Cape Town wraps itself around you and you feel (subconsciously) that you are back in your mother’s womb. And its (consciously) rukking!
That’s how strong the soul created by generations of South Africans is in Galaxy.

This soul was not created simply by partying at Galaxy.
It is much deeper than that.

Trevor Manuel, Kader Asmal, Pallo Jordan and many others cut their political and party teeth in the Galaxy.
Little Jonathan Butler performed as a tiny tot, and Nazier Kapdi was still a drummer when he played at Galaxy. Mark Shuttleworth was but a twinkle in his father’s eye when Galaxy opened its doors.
By the way, Galaxy is still listed in the Cape Town telephone directory as Galaxy Disco

Restaurant……… 28 years later!

The Gala, as its known, will always be the place where you can be who you wana be….

It was in 1993 when West End first opened its doors. It has since established itself as Cape Town’s premier, live entertainment venue.

Chic, deep-red drapery, soft lighting and contemporary furniture sets the scene for that chance encounter with a beloved local or international artist.
